Adoption Procedures

When you are ready to commit to a new best friend, consider making Santa Barbara County Animal Services your first stop. You may use Animal- Pet Search to preview the animals we have available for adoption on site or in our foster homes. Be sure to follow us on Facebook (@santabarbaracountyanimalservices) and Instagram (@sbcanimalservices) for fun pictures and info on our adoptable animals. Due to COVID-19 all visits are currently by appointment. If you see an animal online you are interested in please contact the shelter it is listed under to discuss if that pet might be a match for your family and, if so, to set a time to meet that animal in person.  Remember that not only do we have dogs, cats and rabbits available for adoption at most times, but we also often have other animals such as birds, reptiles, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats and other companion animals too!

All potential adopters fill out an interest survey to help with the matching process.  Forms may be filled out ahead of time and brought to your appointment or filled out when you come to our shelter.

All of our animals have been checked by a veterinarian, vaccinated and treated for fleas or parasites if needed. If your new pet has not already been spayed or neutered, the surgery will be scheduled by our customer care staff. Our staff and volunteers are available to answer questions or advise you on helpful hints for bringing your new pet home. Please feel free to ask questions about topics such as:

  • Introducing a new animal to current pets
  • Litter box or house training,
  • Behavior challenges such as chewing, digging, barking, scratching or jumping up
  • Animal proofing your house
  • Basic obedience training classes.

If you do not find your perfect match, keep an eye on our website. New animals come in every day to our three shelters.  We encourage you to also view animals for adoption at our many adoption partners in the area!
